A Broken Soul

Sweet winter, come to meet me
Kiss my cold lips
All my leaves have fallen
In their place are
Bare twigs
Your harsh winds stole
My once beautiful leaves
Their frailty could not withstand
The cold that you seek

Winter, my friend,
Cover me with your blanket
Tomorrow’s sunrise need not see
That I did not make it
It will rise and fall
And give way to the moon
As I hide beneath you
In my private tomb

Promise me this
Don’t curse my name
This was not to cause,
But to heal pain
An overshadowing grief
An unbearable burden
A broken heart cannot beat
I ask only for your pardon
As I go, please know
I loved you so
But even love cannot mend
A broken soul
